Tips for selecting a sewing machine

Posted by Marie Adams on

A sewing machine, like any tool, is an investment. Choosing the right sewing machine depends on your specific needs and preferences. Here are a few things to consider when looking for a sewing machine:

  1. Machine Type:

    • Mechanical vs. Computerized: Mechanical machines are basic and straightforward. For basic sewing and quilting, this is a good choice. Computerized machines offer more features and often come with built-in stitches and automated functions. You can even go as far as machines that will do embroidery or quilting patterns for you, although these are limited.
  2. Stitch Options:

    • Consider the types and number of stitches the machine offers. Basic machines may have a few essential stitches, while more advanced models provide a variety of decorative and specialty stitches. Some machines come with hundreds of stitches, with the ability to add more.
  3. Ease of Use:

    • Look for a machine that is user-friendly, especially if you are a beginner. Clear labeling, easy threading, and a straightforward bobbin system can make a significant difference. If at all possible, take a class on your machine. Many local shops offer a complimentary training to get you more familiar and comfortable with your machine.
  4. Speed Control:

    • A machine with adjustable speed control is beneficial for beginners as it allows you to start sewing at a slower pace until you become more comfortable.
  5. Feed Mechanism:

    • The feed dogs are responsible for moving the fabric through the machine. Look for a machine with adjustable feed dogs or the ability to drop them for free-motion sewing.
  6. Durability:

    • Consider the build quality and materials used. A sturdy machine is likely to last longer and handle a variety of fabrics.
  7. Size and Weight:

    • Think about the available space in your sewing area and whether you need a portable machine. Some machines are compact and lightweight, making them easier to transport.
  8. Throat Space:

    • The throat space is the distance between the needle and the machine's body. A larger throat space is beneficial when working on larger projects or quilting.
  9. Buttonhole Function:

    • Although not typically used for quilting, check the machine's ability to create buttonholes, if there is a possibility you may need them. Many modern machines have an automatic buttonhole feature, which simplifies the process.
  10. Attachments and Accessories:

    • Consider the availability of accessories and attachments that come with the machine, such as presser feet, extension tables, and additional bobbins.
  11. Brand and Reviews:

    • Research the reputation of the brand and read reviews from other users. This can provide insights into the machine's performance and durability.
  12. Price:

    • Set a budget based on your needs and skill level. There are sewing machines available at various price points, so it's essential to find one that meets your requirements without overstretching your budget.
  13. Warranty and Customer Support:

    • Check the warranty offered by the manufacturer and the availability of customer support. A good warranty provides peace of mind and protection against potential defects. It is a good idea to purchase from a shop that also services your machine. This will save time and money if you ever have issues with your machine.

There are literally hundreds of options for machines. I suggest going to a local shop and trying some out. Ask lots of questions, and do your research. By considering these factors, you can narrow down your options and find a sewing machine that suits your skill level, project requirements, and budget.
